Accession on the road from Chancery Lane to Silsoe this Spring – what did we learn?

It’s been a busy few months for the Accession team, emphasised by financial advisers Richard and Joe headed down to Chancery Lane, London, where Richard was asked to be on the expert panel at The Law Society’s prestigious annual Private Client Conference.

Richard was pleased to be invited to be on the expert panel as they discussed the complexities of family farming with a working case study. Delegates said: “Richard gave a useful overview of how the planning for farming families is going to be different given the changes to Agricultural Property Relief and Business Property Relief... I feel like this topic could be a day in itself and I would definitely attend.”
Richard said: “It is clear from speaking to both farming families at our own events this Spring and delegates at The Law Society’s conference, that people know the impact of the proposed changes from the Autumn Budget is far reaching, but we are still working through the detail on these proposed changes. Without financial advice, that can create worry about the best path to take.”
“In the meantime, what we are advising clients to do remains the same: review what you own and how it is owned, equalise ownership between spouses, and start to develop strategies for estate preservation with your professional advisers.”

In April we welcomed over 60 guests to our first joint event with solicitors Vincent Sykes and farm business consultants Arthey Associates at The Talbot Hotel, Oundle, where we discussed the impact of the proposed changes to inheritance tax from our perspective as financial advisers, and also what that means from the point of view of solicitors and farm business consultants. So often the best outcome can be achieved when all your professional advisers are on the same page and even in the same meeting, so that’s something to bear in mind.
The Bedfordshire YFC Country Show and Rally is always a highlight of our year; it’s a superbly run young farmers event, and with the sun in the skies, the mood was positive as we caught up with over 100 of our clients and professional connections for our Accession Afternoon Tea in the heartland of our business. Thank you to those clients that brought along friends and family looking for advice; we really do appreciate your endorsement and look forward to working with those new connections over the coming weeks.
We were also pleased to support the Cambridgeshire County Show at the end of May with our friends at Land Family Business. In a prime position between the bar and main ring, we were joined by clients for a drink and slice of cake, whilst also welcoming lots of new faces on to the stand.
June saw the return of our Accession Simulated Clay Shoot at Kibworth Shooting Ground, Market Harborough, where we were hosted by Ben Husthwaite, World FITASC and World Sporting clay shoot champion. We welcomed 10 client team captains and their guests for the afternoon, with over 40 guests enjoying the opportunity to pop a few clays with expert coaching, followed up by plenty of iced drinks and a barbeque.

The volume of new enquiries received across our events in the first half of 2025 reflects the levels of uncertainty some are feeling, however we have been pleased to be able to arrange first meetings that will hopefully help those family farms and rural businesses to plan for the future of their legacy. There are solutions available in many cases, the first step is to look for expert help.
